INNOVATOR 2021 — FibreTrace

About the Innovator

Transparency leads to accountability which leads to change. FibreTrace® is an advanced transparency technology business, combining physical and digital traceability with the power of quantification and authentication. Founded in 2018 by a group of like-minded leaders in the global textile industry, FibreTrace is focused on fronting a new era of transparency, honesty and accountability.

FibreTrace® provides brands and retailers with true custody of supply, the ability to quantify and audit fibre, access primary impact data for natural and man-made solutions in real-time. The core of the FibreTrace® technology is a patented luminescent pigment that is embedded into the raw fibre (or optionally at yarn spinning) and is traced, verified and audited in real-time at each step of the global textile supply chain.

This is achieved via a proprietary handheld FibreTrace® scanner which audits the fibre content and sends this information to our platform to be verified against the blockchain. FibreTrace®'s technology is based on the same technology in currency and passports and allows every member in the textile supply chain to take direct accountability for their environmental impact by providing true custody of supply, real-time verification of a product as it moves through the global supply chain, primary impact data on emissions at the farm level, and verification of fibre content and quantity.

The only true way to guarantee traceability and transparency is by connecting the physical traced fibre with the digital blockchain. By connecting both the physical product and the digital information, we create irrefutable storytelling for raw fibres and enable brands to share this with their consumers for the first time. FibreTrace®’s mission is to empower the global textile industry to reduce its impact on the environment.

About the Innovation

Innovation in Traceability and Transparency

Since the pandemic, there has been a rising demand from consumers to know the origins of their products and understand how they are made. Even some of the most conscious suppliers are unable to trace their products back to origin and claim with 100% certainty what fibres their products are made from. FibreTrace® provides three core benefits to the global textile industry; authenticity, storytelling and operational efficiency.

FibreTrace® works by embedding luminescent pigments into the raw fibre in minute quantities and does not affect the quality or output of the yarn, fabric or garment or its wearability. FibreTrace® pigments are indestructible and remain with the fibre through to reuse and recycle. Individual signatures can be created from the pigments allowing differentiation of fibres and blends.

Once embedded into the raw fibre, the luminescent pigment essentially creates a passport for the fibre to move through the supply chain to be traced with digital FibreTrace® Bluetooth® scanning devices which drops information verifying provenance, environmental impact, location, fibre quantification, factory certification and beyond onto the blockchain platform.

The Fibretrace® system allows the brand and its supply chain to be connected in real-time, sharing these valuable insights with their customers for the first time through irrefutable storytelling. FibreTrace®'s development has been strategically built for the fashion industry as a “plug and play” solution to allow for easy adoption without disrupting existing systems. By offering a solution that connects both the physical and digital, FibreTrace allows for trusted data and irrefutable storytelling, enabling the end-consumer to make informed purchasing decisions.

Sanjeev - “Sustainability is everyone’s sons and daughters. It’s the future we promised them and forgot to keep along the way to creating the advanced world they are going to live in. Sustainability is the fuel for my innovation because it’s become a personal responsibility.” Danielle - "The industry has so far struggled to cohesively measure and explain what a "preferred" material or fibre choice actually is. We need to be able to give truthful answers about the supply chain that is backed by scientific & verified data to create irrefutable storytelling for the end-consumer."
