INNOVATOR 2021 — DRESSX

About the Innovator

DRESSX is the largest fashion store for digital-only collections from well-known brands and 3D designers. Understanding the scale of the negative environmental footprint produced by the fashion industry, DRESSX was created by Daria Shapovalova and Natalia Modenova in July 2020 as the first ever platform for digital garments that generate zero waste, carbon footprints, and chemicals during their production. Working with traditional and 3D fashion designers, DRESSX provides a sustainable yet fun alternative to traditional fashion, enabling digital garments to be worn on photos and videos across various digital platforms as a substitute for physical clothes used for content creation.

In order to democratize fashion for the final consumer, DRESSX gives every client an opportunity to digitally dress in the clothing they have always wanted to wear - and get instant verification from their followers on social media and beyond. Since its launch, DRESSX has become the biggest platform for digital fashion, with over 150 designers on board and thousands of items digitized and available for purchase on the website.

In August 2021, DRESSX launched its first app on the App Store, where the content creation with new outfits became even easier: digital looks can be applied in Augmented Reality (AR) on the real-time videos and photos. DRESSX collaborated with a number of fashion companies, providing the technology for digital fashion dressing to Farfetch, featuring collections from Burberry, Balenciaga, Off-White, Dolce & Gabbana, Khaite, Palm Angels and more.

DRESSX’s signature AR digital hat was worn over 1 mln time on the app and social media platforms. DRESSX digital fashion was featured in Vogue Business, WWD, HighSnobiety, Forbes, Financial Times and more high-profile media, with the covers for L’Officiel Vietnam, L’Officiel Ukraine and Glamour Hungary print issues. At DRESSX, we are absolutely sure that the future of fashion is digital.

Innovation in Design Process (including product digitization)

DressX gives both 3D designers and traditional fashion brands a platform to sell and distribute digital clothing, whether it's existing digital assets or giving physical designs a new digital life and a new revenue opportunity. The design and production processes can take anything from a couple of days to several months depending on the initial idea, designer experience, and the complexity of the items.

Not dissimilar to the construction of a designer couture gown, except with far less waste, energy and air miles. No water is used for the creation or usage of digital fashion, and production of a digital garment, on average, leaves 97% less CO2 footprint compared to the production of a physical garment. The design and production processes of the digital garments can take anything from a couple of days to several months, depending on the initial idea, the level of experience of the designer, and the complexity of the item.

Once the garments are designed and produced, they get uploaded to the platform. The DRESSX app provides an opportunity of real-time dressing of AR looks on short videos. This way, users can avoid purchasing new clothes for their content creation. Videos are becoming more popular on social feeds, and DRESSX built this product to meet the demand of GenZs and Millennials.

Currently, DRESSX is working with designers on other B2B use cases. For instance, eliminating production of samples and digitalising new collections, developing the collections from scratch so wholesale is not being done physically. DRESSX can also enable brands to get pre-orders from customers online before they produce a physical item and facilitate on-demand production.

At the same time, digital patterns can also be used for physical production. DRESSX will also enable the luxury digital fashion category through launching wearable NFTs – limited in number, unique and exclusive to their owners digital fashion looks. Preliminary in-house research on the topic suggests that using proof of stake and layer2 solutions reduces CO2 footprint of the NFTs by almost 99%, paving the way towards a more sustainable approach to NFTs in digital fashion.
